37 jobs

I've spent a significant amount of time in recent days pouring over MLA's job list. After searching the list in every way I can think of, I have found 37 jobs that I may be able to apply for. 37 is not bad in a year in which some of my friends have less than 20 jobs to apply for. But when I think that 2 years ago, well before I was ready to go on the market, they were over 70 jobs in my area, 37 is a bit disconcerting.

Wow, to me that sounds like a huge amount. I don't even think faculty in my old department would write that many letters. Usually there are no more than a dozen jobs that fit (and that would be considered a good year), and I have had several friends gain employment applying to less than six. Good luck!

37!!!! wow! There are only 11 in my field, more if I'm willing to become a generalist.

Good luck!

Hmmm, 37 sounds like a lot, but then, again, you're right, from 70 to 37 is almost 50% less!

My husband is appalled at the scarcity of jobs in his area. I'm not even looking at mine (didn't look last year either). There are usually 4-5 at most, so perhaps this year there'll be none.

P-duck, 37 includes generalist and Women's studies positions. It also includes a number of jobs that are looking for Americanists in either 19th or 20th century or in 18th or the 19th century. I've noticed that most of the jobs are really broadly defined this year as opposed to previous years.

And there are few job openings at universities that are likely to get me a partner placement at CU.
