Second pregnancies

I think this will become a recurring topic for me, as I am experiencing a second pregnancy. After Wild Man was born, I wrote a series of posts about things no one ever tells women about labor and childbirth, so I think I will write a series of posts about second pregnancies and things no one ever tells you.

For today, I want to share this little tidbit: being pregnant the second time around, especially when your older child is a toddler, is much, much harder than the first time.

I can totally believe that. I've often thought during this pregnancy that I could not survive it if I had to take care of anyone other than just myself.

Adding to the list of the things that are "harder" the second (or third) time around: you can start having Braxton-Hicks contractions as early as 15 weeks (I find this nothing short of crazy, even as I have them). Also, when you start nursing, like right after baby Z is born, contractions can be much more painful than those you experienced after previous deliveries. The postpartum nurse I had after Eliza was born let me in on this little secret after I was in so much pain I finally asked for something stronger than Tylenol.

On the good side, one of the great things about being pregnant while also mothering a toddler (or an 8-yr old, for that matter) is watching an older child fall in love with a new sibling...watching Eliza give the baby kisses on my belly melts my heart every time!

Hope you're feeling good now that you're out of the first trimester!

You ain't saying nothing but the truth! My second pregnancy, which began when my son was 11 months old, was so extremely and completely tiring. My husband would have to work on Saturday mornings, and I remember dreading those times because being pregnant and handling a toddler at the same time was just too overwhelming! But I echo AcadeMama's last revelation - my kids are now 16 months and almost 3 years, and watching them together, esp. laughing at things that only they think are funny, is one of the best moments of my day.
